Van Zyl Drilling

The Van Zyl family started the drilling business in 1964 when the founding member, Koos van Zyl started Van Zyl Boorwerke. At his side was his wife, Miems van Zyl and later his sons joined the business after school and national service. In 1989 Koos and his sons registered Van Zyl Boorwerke as a Close Corporation. Unfortunately, Mr van Zyl passed away in 2010 but left behind a legacy that is rich in management, technical skills and knowledge built up over the last three decades.
The ‘‘young blood” also made significant expansion opportunities possible by venturing into the corporate market and obtaining work at major mining houses and corporations. The business started out by drilling boreholes (mainly for water) for businesses and private property owners. During the past couple of years, the business entered a capital expansion program by acquiring different types of drilling rigs and their latest technology consist of Sonic drilling for geotechnical holes to expand operations and to shorten production time.

Mission

All the oils and chemicals we use are biodegradable. We use these oils and chemicals during the drilling process, we apply precautionary measures to prevent these substances to penetrate the soil. We constantly explore technology which will assist us to protect the environment. We also adhere to the environmental policies of our clients and adjust our practices in accordance with these measures. We also promote business practices that respect the Earth and Environment.

Affirmative action

Affirmative Action Initiatives

We have deployed a strategy of affirmative action a long time ago. Our current statistics reflect our staff consisting of 81% employees coming from a historically disadvantaged background (HDI’s). In our equity plan we made provision for the training of staff from this group to later on be promoted to higher positions. Over the next five years we foresee an increased promotion rate of these employees to the management team. We are fortunate to have several of these individuals in our employment with the motivation and skills set to excel to higher positions in our business.

Health and Safety

Quality and Safety Process

Our Staff Composition on site consist of the following roles as needed.

Per rig: two workers have: first aid, firefighting, working on heights, harness inspectors. Our allocated drivers also undergo Hazchem training, and our operators go through a truck mounted crane training course. All our workers undergo a medical to declare them fit as well as site inductions.
